It was recorded by pianist from Madrid, Alfonso Santisteban, who added "Carlos" between his name and surname as a Brazilian name, perhaps in Antonio Carlos Jobim tribute. Santisteban wrote and played many OSTs in sixties and seventies between Spain and Italy, where put music to several X and B films. In 1968 entered in Spanish public TV channel (TVE) as a musical director, working for several programs. Bossa '68 contains 12 Santisteban compositions. He plays piano, with sidemen as Alfonso Ortiz (guitar), Enrique García (drums), Djalmar (pandeiro), USA trumpet player (Anthony Brito), Jerry Crane (trombone) and Rafael Comas (flute).

George Braith - Two Souls In One 1964 (Toshiba EMI)

In some ways, it's hard to view George Braith's playing a soprano and alto saxophone simultaneously as anything other than a gimmick, especially since it's nearly presented that way on his debut album, Two Souls in One. Braith plays the two horns on the folk calypso "Mary Ann" and the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb," limiting himself to the melody and bridges, probably because it's hard to finger anything else but simple lines when you're playing two instruments at once. Furthermore, the tone of the double sax is jarring -- thin, reedy and layered with harmonic overtones, it sounds inhuman and utterly bizarre. Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who pioneered double reeds, explored the harmonic possibilites inherent with the dueling instruments, but Braith saves his explorations for solo alto excursions. He's quite good at these alto solos, as the elegant "Poinciana" and the hot solos of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" prove, but he sounds restrained, not freed, by the double horn. Nevertheless, Two Souls in One remains an enjoyable, occasionally rewarding, collection of soul-jazz and cautiously adventurous hard bop. Guitarist Grant Green and organist Billy Gardner both shine during their time in the spotlight, particularly in the infectious rhythms of "Mary Ann." And Braith himself does leave a large impression, especially in the 14-minute tour de force "Braith-Away," which reveals the full strength of his talent instead of simply hinting at it.

Writer Jeff Tamarkin says "ex Butterfield Band guitarist Mike Bloomfield, drummer Buddy Miles, and others put this soul-rock band together in 1967. This debut is a testament to their ability to catch fire and keep on burnin'." That The Electric Flag do so well -- they appeared at the Monterey International Pop Festival with the Blues Project, Paul Butterfield, and Janis Joplin, and all these groups had some musical connection to each other beyond that pivotal festival. A Long Time Comin' is the "new soul" described appropriately enough by the late critic Lillian Roxon, and tunes like "She Should Have Just" and "Over-Lovin' You" lean more towards the soul side than the pop so many radio listeners were attuned to back then.

Nick Gravenites was too much of a purist to ride his blues on the Top 40 the way Felix Cavaliere gave us "Groovin'," so Janis Joplin's eventual replacement in Big Brother & the Holding Company, Gravenites, and this crew pour out "Groovin' Is Easy" on this disc. It's a classy production, intellectual ideas with lots of musical changes, a subdued version of what Joplin herself would give us on I Got Dem Ole Kozmic Blues Again, Mama two years later, with some of that album written by vocalist Gravenites. Though launched after Al Kooper's the Blues Project, A Long Time Comin' itself influenced bands who would go on to sell more records.

In the traditional "Wine," it is proclaimed "you know Janis Joplin, she'll tell you all about that wine, baby." As good as the album is, though, the material is pretty much composed by Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, when they're not covering Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and adding spoken-word news broadcasts to the mix. More contributions by Buddy Miles and Gravenites in the songwriting department would have been welcome here.By allmusic

In an unusual setting for a groove/soul jazz setting, B3 organist extraordinaire big John Patton creates a band around himself that includes Grant Green, drummer Otis Finch, and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. It's truly weird to think of vibes on a groove date, but the way Patton's understated playing works, and the way Green is literally all things to all players, Hutcherson's role is not only a clearly defined one, but adds immeasurably to both depth and texture on this date. What also makes this possible is the symbiotic relationship between Patton and Green.

There is a double groove conscious swing happening on every track here, from the bluesed-out slip and slide of the title track which opens the record to a killer version of Hank Mobley's "The Turnaround," which expands the blues vibe into solid soul territory because of Hutcherson's ability to play pianistically and slip into the funk groove whenever necessary. Green's deadly in his solo on the track, shimmering arpeggios through Patton's big fat chords and chunky hammering runs. Also notable are Patton's own tunes, the most beautiful of which is "Latona," a floating Latin number with a killer salsa rhythm in 6/8.

As Patton vamps through the chorus, Green slips in one of his gnarliest solos ever. It begins with a groove like run in the hard bop blues and then shoves itself into overdrive, capturing the cold sweat of a Bola Sete or Wes Montgomery in his groove years. But when Green goes for the harmonic edges, all bets are off: Hutcherson lays out, and he and Patton go running to the bridge and bring the melody back just in time to take it out. This is one of the least appreciated of Patton's records, and there's no reason for it it is great.by allmusic

Με την Γιοβάννα νομίζω πως έχετε καταλάβει ότι υπάρχει μια ιδιαίτερη σχέση.Αν και το κομμάτι “Αγάπη μου, Αγάπη” το έχω αναρτήσει από το Cd Οι Μεγαλες Ορχηστρες του '60. Και στα δυο τραγούδια την μουσική ενορχήστρωση την είχε αναλάβει ο Κώστας Καπνίσης στο κομμάτι "Αστέρια Δυο" τους στίχους έχει γράψει η Ηλέκτρα Παπακώστα μαζί με την Γιοβάννα και στο "Αγάπη μου,Αγαπη" οι στίχοι είναι της Ηλέκτρα Παπακώστα και της Κικής Σεγδίτσα.

Eδώ μοιράζομαι ολόκληρο τo 45.Εξαιρετική η συνοδεία της κιθάρας στο "Αγάπη μου,Αγαπη" της οποίας η μελωδία μου θυμίζει μάλλον κάποια Bossa nova που αδυνατώ να σκεφτώ.

P.s Το κομμάτι Αστέρια Δυο προέρχεται από το Φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης το 1964.

Working with the same quartet that cut Heavy Soul -- organist Freddie Roach, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Al Harewood -- Ike Quebec recorded another winning hard bop album with It Might As Well Be Spring. In many ways, the record is a companion piece to Heavy Soul. Since the two albums were recorded so close together, it's not surprising that there a number of stylistic similarities, but there are subtle differences to savor. The main distinction between the two dates is that It Might As Well Be Spring is a relaxed, romantic date comprised of standards. It provides Quebec with ample opportunity to showcase his rich, lyrical ballad style, and he shines throughout the album. Similarly, Roach has a tasteful, understated technique, whether he's soloing or providing support for Quebec. The pair have a terrific, sympathetic interplay that makes It Might As Well Be Spring a joyous listen.By Allmusic.

Hugh Masekela (born Johannesburg, April 4, 1939) is a South African flugelhorn and cornet player. In 1961, as part of the anti-apartheid campaign, he was exiled to the United States where he was befriended by Harry Belafonte. He has played primarily in jazz ensembles, with guest appearances on albums by The Byrds and Paul Simon. In 1987, he had a hit single with "Bring Him Back Home" which became an anthem for the movement to free Nelson Mandela. After apartheid ended, Masekela returned to South Africa where he now lives.

Hugh Masekela was an old collaborator of Abdullah Ibrahim. He is reported to have been initially inspired in his musical growth by Trevor Huddleston, a British priest working in the South African townships who financed Masekela's first trumpet. Masekela played his way through the vibrant Sophiatown scene with The Jazz Epistles and to Britain with King Kong, to find himself in New York in the early 1960s. He had hits in the United States with the pop jazz tunes "Up, Up and Away" and the number one smash "Grazin' in the Grass".

A renewed interest in his African roots led him to collaborate with West and Central African musicians, and finally to reconnect with South African players when he set up a mobile studio in Botswana, just over the South African border, in the 1980s. Here he re-absorbed and re-used mbaqanga strains, a style he has continued to use since his return to South Africa in the early 1990s.

Paced by his only hit of the rock era, Comin' Home Baby! is a real crossover record, balancing a few groovy dance numbers (like the title track) with early-'60s cool jazz versions of the standards "Walkin'," "Moanin'," and "On Green Dolphin Street." Though Mel Tormé never made a terrible record -- his crisp voice and ineffable delivery carried all of his dates -- this session has to count as a low point. The constant striving for some sort of jazz-hipster atmosphere relegates one of Tormé's positive attributes -- his excellent scatting -- into little more than a novelty act. Shorty Rogers, who arranged the record except for the two hit hopefuls (Claus Ogerman's "Comin' Home Baby!" and "Right Now"), attempts to equal Marty Paich's excellent arrangement on the mid-'50s records -- and doesn't quite succeed. "Moanin'" is a stale recasting of the superior Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross version, and the child noise on "Dat Dere" is just baffling. Compared to Tormé's other record for Atlantic, Sunday in New York, Comin' Home Baby! is a passé work that understandably can't get much of a reaction from the usually majestic Mel Tormé.

Vangelis Papathanassiou - organ, Vasilis Bakopoulos - rhythm guitar, Sortiris Arnis - bass, Tassos Papastamatis - vocals, Kostas Skokos - drums, Nikos Mastorakis - guest songwriter. From 1965 to 1967, they were The Shadows of Greece. They filled concert halls with screaming fans, all dying to hear something similar to what they knew was going on in England and the USA. The fans wanted their own Beatles experience, and The Forminx gave it to them. Vangelis knew at an early age that for the Greek band to be successful, they needed to sing their hits in English. They were even able to get their music sent to the UK and the USA, and had singles pressed in those countries. Vangelis was in a great position. He had one of the few Hammond organs in Greece during that time. He did a lot of side work. And so he grew apart from the band and eventually formed his own Papathanassiou Set. The famous Greek director Theo Angelopoulos began a documentary film on the band, The Forminx Story, that was never fully realized. I wrote to him recently and he responded that the print has been lost and unlikely to be found. Perhaps Nikos Mastorakis has a copy, and that gives me some hope that we might see this rare footage.By Vangelis Collector

Στο απόγειο των swingning 60s ο John Phillip Law ενσαρκώνει τον Diabolik, έναν πολύ large χαρακτήρα, που κινείται ανάμεσα σε Bond και Batman του Adam West. Ζει καταληστεύοντας τους πλούσιους στα χρήματα των οποίων κυριολεκτικά κυλιέται μαζί με τη συνεργό του Eva Kant (στο ρόλο η breathtaking αυστριακή ηθοποιός Merisa Mell). Ήταν η μεγαλύτερη παραγωγή που σκηνοθέτησε ο Bava και της έδωσε να καταλάβει. Trademark στυλιζαρισμένη φωτογραφία, φουτουριστικά sets και ματ backgrounds κι ένα από τα καλύτερα soundtracks του Ennio Morricone αναπαράγουν πιστά την περιπετειώδη ζωή του χάρτινου ήρωα (by the way ο Diabolik θεωρείται η πρώτη μεταφορά κόμικ στον κινηματογράφο) και παράλληλα εισάγουν το θεατή σε μια φαντασμαγορική ψυχεδέλεια αντικατοπτρίζοντας το trend της εποχής. Ο Law ήταν στα πάνω του εκείνη την περίοδο κι ο επόμενός του ρόλος ήταν πλάι στην Jane Fonda, στο Barbarella επίσης παραγωγή του De Laurentiis. Το σενάριο, βέβαια, εξυπηρετεί την δράση, αλλά αφήνει χώρο για κωμικές στιγμές που ταιριάζουν με το ολικό concept. Ηδονικό και χάρμα κινηματογραφικών οφθαλμών το Diabolik έχει μια διαχρονική επιρροή στην pop κουλτούρα. Ήταν η τελευταία ταινία του MST3K, την παρώδησαν οι Beastie Boys στο video του "Body Movin’" και το metal supergroup Fantomas την έκανε καριέρα.του Μιχάλη Κωνσταντέλλη

James Walter "Jimmy" Castor (June 23, 1940 – January 16, 2012) was an American pop and funk musician. He is best known as a fun disco/funk saxophonist, with his biggest hit single being 1972's million seller, "Troglodyte (Cave Man)".

Castor started as a doo-wop singer in New York. He wrote and recorded "I Promise to Remember" in 1956. Castor then replaced Frankie Lymon in The Teenagers in 1957 before switching to the saxophone in 1960. He had a solo hit with "Hey Leroy, Your Mama's Callin' You" on Smash Records in 1966. Castor also played sax on Dave "Baby" Cortez's hit "Rinky Dink." He formed the Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1972 and signed with RCA. As leader of The Jimmy Castor Bunch in the 1970s, and also as a solo artist, he has released several successful albums and singles. The group reached the peak of their commercial success in 1972 with the release of their album, It's Just Begun, which featured two hit singles: the title track and "Troglodyte (Cave Man)," which was a large hit in the U.S., peaking at #6 in the Billboard Hot 100. The track stayed in the chart for 14 weeks and was a million seller by 30 June 1972, and received a gold disc award from the R.I.A.A.

Castor continued the trend in 1975 with "The Bertha Butt Boogie" and later recorded "E-Man Boogie," "King Kong," "Bom Bom," and "Potential." The Castor band included keyboardist/trumpeter Gerry Thomas, bassist Doug Gibson, guitarist Harry Jensen, conga player Lenny Fridle, Jr., and drummer Bobby Manigault.Thomas, who simultaneously recorded with the Fatback Band, left in the '80s to exclusively record with them. Castor recorded as a solo performer from 1976 until 1988. He had one of his bigger hits in many years with a 1988 revival of "Love Makes a Woman," which paired him with disco diva Joyce Sims. Castor had his own record label, Long Distance, in the 1980s.

Many of the group's tunes have been heavily sampled in films and in hip-hop. In particular, the saxophone hook and groove from "It's Just Begun" and the spoken word intro and groove from "Troglodyte" (namely, "What we're gonna do right here is go back...") have been sampled extensively.

He died in 16 Jan.2012 from heart failure.

Σε κάθε ένα από τα δύο νομοθετικά σώματα (κογκρέσο/ γερουσία) των ΗΠΑ έχουν σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα εισαχθεί προς ψήφιση δύο διαφορετικά νομοσχέδια, που θέτουν σε σοβαρό κίνδυνο τα ψηφιακά μας δικαιώματα σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο. Αν τελικά οποιοδήποτε από τα νομοσχέδια αυτά ψηφιστεί, θα συσταθεί με βάση αυτό ένας πανίσχυρος μηχανισμός διαδικτυακής λογοκρισίας, οι επιπτώσεις του οποίου θα επεκταθούν πέρα από τα σύνορα των ΗΠΑ και θα αλλάξουν για πάντα το διαδίκτυο όπως το ξέρουμε. Η εισαγωγή των νομοσχεδίων προς ψήφιση έχει ξεσηκώσει θύελλα κοινωνικών αντιδράσεων τόσο στο διαδίκτυο όσο και στην Αμερικάνικη κοινωνία, ενώνοντας ένα ευρώ μέτωπο κινημάτων, φορέων και οργανώσεων καθώς εταιρειών – κολοσσών.

SOPA / PIPA ή μάλλον «Σώπα(σε)» Το SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), το πρώτο και πιο επικίνδυνο από τα δύο νομοσχέδια, το οποίο εισήχθη στις 26 Οκτωβρίου από μία μικτή επιτροπή Δημοκρατικών – Ρεπουμπλικανών βουλευτών και αναμένεται να ψηφιστεί στις 15 Δεκέμβρη, προβλέπει την εγκαθίδρυση μίας μαύρης λίστας ιστοσελίδων, η πρόσβαση στις οποίες θα αποκόπτεται για οποιονδήποτε παραμένει στις ΗΠΑ. Σύμφωνα με τις διατάξεις του νομοσχεδίου οποιοσδήποτε κάτοχος πνευματικών δικαιωμάτων θα μπορεί με μία απλή εισαγγελική παραγγελία να υποχρεώνει όλους τους τηλεπικοινωνιακούς παρόχους της χώρας να διακόπτουν εντελώς την πρόσβαση σε ιστοσελίδες, που υποστηρίζεται ότι εμπλέκονται με παραβίαση δικαιωμάτων πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας, αλλά και καταχωρητές ονομάτων χώρου, παρόχους φιλοξενίας και άλλων υπηρεσιών προς αυτές να διακόπτουν κάθε συνεργασία. Τυχόν ψήφιση του παραπάνω νομοσχεδίου θα αποτελέσει άλλο ένα λιθαράκι στον νομικό επεκτατισμό των ΗΠΑ, καθώς θα καθιστά δίχως την δυνατότητα προηγούμενης δικαστικής προστασίας μη προσβάσιμες σε όλες τις ΗΠΑ ιστοσελίδες, που έχουν καταχωρηθεί ή/και φιλοξενούνται αλλού στον κόσμο. Η δε λογοκρισία, που επιφέρει η ψήφισή του, θα συγκρίνεται τόσο τεχνικά όσο και ποιοτικά με το ψηφιακό «Σινικό Τείχος» της Κίνας. Παρόμοιου χαρακτήρα προβλέψεις έχει και το PIPA (Protect IP), νομοσχέδιο που βρίσκεται στα τελευταία στάδια ψήφισής του στην Γερουσία.

Οι Επιπτώσεις Τα προτεινόμενα νομοσχέδια αποτελούν στροφή σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο αναφορικά με το μέγεθος περιστολής των ψηφιακών μας δικαιωμάτων. Η δημιουργία μαύρης λίστας ιστοσελίδων και διαδικτυακών τόπων, που καταγγέλλεται ότι παραβιάζουν το δίκαιο της πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας, η εισαγωγή σε αυτή δίχως την πρότερη έκδοση απόφασης δικαστηρίου και η ταχεία διακοπή πρόσβασης, το βάρος σε έξοδα και ενέργειες για την επαναφορά της οποίας θα πέφτει στον πλέον εγγεγραμμένο στη λίστα αυτή, αποτελούν πρωτοφανείς επεμβάσεις στον κυβερνοχώρο, που πλήττουν με απαράδεκτο τρόπο θεμελιώδη δικαιώματα και εγκαθιδρύουν ένα καθεστώς γενικευμένης καταστολής. Η ραγδαία επέκταση των ιδιωτικών δικαιωμάτων πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας τα τελευταία χρόνια αλλά και η ουσιαστική ασυμβατότητά τους με τα ψηφιακά περιβάλλοντα θα οδηγήσει στη επέκταση της χρήσης ενός τέτοιου μηχανισμού λογοκρισίας και για άλλους σκοπούς, όπως για την περιστολή της ελευθερίας έκφρασης και για τον αθέμιτο εμπορικό ανταγωνισμό. Θα αυξήσει δε υπέρμετρα την ευθύνη και τα έξοδα λειτουργίας των μεσαζόντων του διαδικτύου, οδηγώντας σταδιακά σε μία υπέρμετρη εμπορευματοποίηση του κυβερνοχώρου. Αν μάλιστα τέτοια νομοσχέδια ψηφιστούν στις ΗΠΑ, οι οποίες αποτελούν παραδοσιακά τη χώρα με τον κομβικό ρόλο στο διαδίκτυο, η ψήφιση πανομοιότυπων νόμων σε όλο τον κόσμο θα είναι απλώς θέμα χρόνου.

Οι Κοινωνικές Αντιστάσεις Ενάντια στην αδιανόητη επίθεση καταστολής του κράτους των ΗΠΑ και των ισχυρών κατόχων πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας έχει συγκροτηθεί ένα ευρύτατο κοινωνικό κίνημα, που απλώνεται σε όλες τις ηλικίες και τα κοινωνικά στρώματα. Κατά την πρώτη ημέρα συζήτησης του SOPA στο Κογκρέσο, η οποία είχε ανακηρυχθεί ως ημέρα Αμερικανικής λογοκρισίας, εστάλησαν ένα εκατομμύριο e-mails διαμαρτυρίας, συλλέχθηκαν 250.000 υπογραφές και έγιναν 88.000 τηλέφωνα διαμαρτυρίας, ενώ συμμετείχαν περισσότερες από 6.000 ιστοσελίδες. Συνασπισμοί από δεκάδες από τις μεγαλύτερες οργανώσεις υπεράσπισης δικαιωμάτων έχουν ενωθεί στον αγώνα ανατροπής του νομοσχεδίου. Ακόμη όμως και επιχειρηματικοί κολοσσοί των νέων τεχνολογιών, όπως οι Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, έχουν εκδηλώσει με θετικές ενέργειες την αντίθεσή τους.

Η κατάσταση στην Ευρώπη δεν είναι πολύ καλύτερη. Ήδη σε Γαλλία και Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο δρακόντιες νομοθεσίες υποχρεώνουν τηλεπικοινωνιακούς παρόχους να μην παρέχουν πρόσβαση στο διαδίκτυο για έναν χρόνο σε χρήστες, που καταγγέλθηκαν ότι παραβιάζουν το δίκαιο πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση έχει επισήμως ταχθεί υπέρ της ACTA, μίας υπό διαβούλευση διακρατικής σύμβασης, η οποία θα εγκαθιδρύει παγκόσμιο έλεγχο στο διαδίκτυο. Τέτοιες ωμές παρεμβάσεις δεν τηρούν πλέον ούτε τα προσχήματα τήρησης της δημοκρατικής νομιμότητας. Είναι στο χέρι όλων μας να αλλάξουμε τα πράγματα με δημιουργία μαχητικών και οριζόντιων κινημάτων και εδώ, στη χώρα μας σε συντονισμό με το παγκόσμιο κίνημα για την υπεράσπιση και διεύρυνση των ψηφιακών δικαιωμάτων.By Digital Liberation Network.

Issued to coincide with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's historic exhibit of the same name, this two-Lp set is a treasure-trove of hits, misses, rarities, and smoking grooves. Certainly Nash Vegas is the capital of country music, but in its day it also boasted a wealth of stomping rhythm and blues music that flourished in the city for the better part of three decades, until the bulldozers of "urban renewal" destroyed much of its cultural base and forced it from its terrain. With 35 tracks, plus a pair of bonus tracks that are commercials, this set is an affordable, indispensable introduction to a nearly forgotten part of American musical history. The labels represented here are a cross-section of the great regional independents that were so numerous n the '40s, '50s and '60s.

Imprints such as Do-Ra-Mi, who recorded Audrey Bryant, Excello, Champion, Sun, Hickory, Bullet, Dial, A-Bet, Elf, and Sound Stage recorded both luminaries and nobodies. Here are early sides by Hank Crawford when he was in a jump band, the wild and wooly Esquerita, Joe Tex, Arthur Alexander, Roscoe Shelton, Joe Simon, Etta James, Johnny Adams, and Christine Kittrell. And there are cuts by cats like Johnny Jones, Nashville's premier blues guitar slinger, Audrey Bryant, the city's Sarah Vaughan, and others who scored big on Nashville radio and jukeboxes, such as Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson, Clifford Curry, and Robert Knight. While some of these names might not mean much to causal listeners of old rhythm and blues and soul, connoisseurs will be delighted to find these sides, many of them on Lp for the first time. However, the appeal of this collection should not be limited to aficionados, as virtually every track is crackling with energy, verve, and raw immediate soul. Sound is better than decent, the selection is impeccable, and the track notes by Michael Gray are top-notch.By Allmusic.

There has never been and may never be again a bluesman quite like Albert Collins. "The Master Of The Telecaster" was born on October 1, 1932, in Leona, Texas. A cousin of the legendary Lightnin' Hopkins, Collins emerged with a blues sound and style all his own, featuring a combination of icy echo, shattering, ringing, sustained high notes, an ultra-percussive right-hand attack, and an unheard-of minor key guitar tuning (taught to him by his cousin Willow Young). Deeply influenced by T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker and Gatemouth Brown, Collins absorbed the sounds of Mississippi, Chicago, and especially Texas. He formed his own band in 1952, packing clubs around Houston. In the early 1960s, Collins' "cool sound" instrumentals like the million-seller Frosty (recorded with a young Johnny Winter and Janis Joplin in attendance at the studio) and follow-ups Sno Cone and Thaw Out were all over R&B radio. Soon he was sharing stages with his idols Gatemouth Brown and T-Bone Walker. Then, in the mid-'60s (following a move from Texas to Kansas City to California), Collins broke into the rock 'n' roll world, releasing three albums produced by members of Canned Heat, and began playing the San Francisco psychedelic circuit. But Albert's greatest success came after he signed with Alligator in 1978 and cut ICE PICKIN''. It won the Best Blues Album of the Year Award from the Montreux Jazz Festival, and was nominated for a Grammy. His following Alligator albums helped earn Collins every award the blues world had to offer. And, along with Johnny Copeland and Robert Cray (who decided on a career as a bluesman after seeing Collins play his high school prom) Collins cut the Grammy-winning SHOWDOWN!. Even after he was firmly established as a major modern bluesman, Collins never got too big for his fans and friends, and never took things easy. And he never relinquished the wheel of his battered tour bus that he loved to drive so much. Along with his band, The Icebreakers, Collins' live shows -- driven by his kinetic stage presence -- were legendary testaments to the power of the blues. With his untimely death in 1993, Albert Collins left behind a blues legacy that continues to amaze and delight blues fans all over the world.

Amon Duul II - Tanz Der Lemminge 1971 (Liberty)

There aren't many double art-rock albums from the early '70s that have stood the test of time, but then again, there aren't many albums like Tanz, and there certainly aren't many groups like Amon Düül II. While exact agreement over which of their classic albums is the absolute standout may never be reached, in terms of ambition combined with good musicianship and good humor, the group's third album, is probably the best candidate still. The musical emphasis is more on expansive arrangements and a generally gentler, acoustic or soft electric vibe; the brain-melting guitar from Yeti isn't as prominent on Tanz, for example, aside from the odd freakout here and there. You will find lengthy songs divided up into various movements, but with titles like "Dehypnotized Toothpaste" and "Overheated Tiara," po-faced seriousness is left at the door. The music isn't always wacky per se, but knowing that the group can laugh at itself is a great benefit. The first three tracks each take up a side of vinyl on the original release, and all are quite marvelous. "Syntelman's March of the Roaring Seventies" works through a variety of acoustic parts, steering away from folksiness for a more abstract, almost playfully classical sense of space and arrangement, before concluding with a brief jam. "Restless Skylight-Transistor Child" is more fragmented, switching between aggressive (and aggressively weird) and subtle passages. One part features Meid and Knaup singing over an arrangement of guitars, synths and mock choirs that's particularly fine, and quite trippy to boot. "Chamsin Soundtrack" exchanges variety for a slow sense of mystery and menace, with instruments weaving in and out of the mix while never losing the central feel of the song. Three briefer songs close out the record, a nice way to get in some quick grooves at the end.

Move Your Hand was recorded live at Club Harlem in Atlantic City on August 9, 1969. Organist Lonnie Smith led a small combo -- featuring guitarist Larry McGee, tenor saxist Rudy Jones, bari saxist Ronnie Cuber, and drummer Sylvester Goshay -- through a set that alternated originals with two pop covers, the Coasters' "Charlie Brown" and Donovan's "Sunshine Superman." Throughout, the band works a relaxed, bluesy, and, above all, funky rhythm they abandon improvisation and melody for a steady groove, so much that the hooks of the two pop hits aren't recognizable until a few minutes into the track. No one player stands out, but Move Your Hand is thoroughly enjoyable, primarily because the group never lets their momentum sag throughout the session. Though the sound of the record might be somewhat dated, the essential funk of the album remains vital.

When DJ Sellout found a copy of this original 1977 US LP-release recently in a local thrift store here in Germany for 50 cents, his collector friends and Sonorama label mates Ekkehart and Carsten immediately were interested. Although they hadn`t known the album previously, after doing a bit of research and contacting artist and composer Carlos Franzetti in the US they started to realize that an outstanding reissue was on its way. In addition to a first ever re-release of the complete material from the out of print album “Grafitti”, Sonorama Records is proud to present two previously unreleased bonus tracks from the archives of Carlos Franzetti. Collectors and DJs will hopefully agree that this is a truly great “jazz-funk-latin-disco-fusion” record, with a mesmerizing musical mixture and quality that is far ahead of its time.By Sonorama

1977 was my second year of life in America after coming from Argentina and settling in New York in 1975. At first, music opportunities were not what I had hoped they would be, and I had to quickly learn new styles of music in order to survive, work and pay the rent. That’s how a classically trained pianist starts playing salsa, club dates, Greek music and hundreds of other different genres. Of course, my main interest was to play jazz - and what a scene New York was for jazz in the seventies! I was very fortunate that eventually I started gigging with some great musicians such as Ray Barretto, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Joe Farrell and others. After a while I had the chance to make two records. “Grafitti”, originally recorded in 1977, came as an offer from producer Daniel Weiss to do a recording combining Jazz, Latin, funk and Disco! The band I used were the musicians with whom I had been playing all those different styles of music which I mentioned before. They were able to cut into that conglomeration of music styles with ease and artistry. The budget only allowed us to record the entire album in six hours, including some overdubs, but I remember that recording this music was a lot of fun with plenty of drive and energy.

Later, my musical life went in other directions which led me into arranging for well-known artists, movie scoring, classical composition and, yes, some more jazz playing. Grafitti went into hibernation until a few years ago when a track from the album, “Cocoa Funk,” was included in a compilation disc by a UK label. All of a sudden, the original and very scarce Grafitti LPs started selling for top dollars via internet auctions and became some sort of cult classic amongst collectors. The fact that “Grafitti” is being re-released by Sonorama Records after thirty years makes me think that what we recorded on that summer afternoon back in 1977 not only had the essence to survive but also to interest new generations of listeners. The added bonus tracks, “Rhumba Dreams” and “Guajira Without Words,” were recorded a few months after “Grafitti”. They were part of a Latin jazz project that was never released, so this is their world premiere on disc. David Holmes - Analyze That 2002 (Island)

David Holmes' soundtrack for Analyze That, the sequel to Harold Ramis, Billy Crystal, and Robert DeNiro's hit mobster and shrink comedy Analyze This, finds the Irish composer operating on autopilot, or at least below the standard he set for himself with the distinctive music he wrote for Out of Sight and Ocean's 11. Tracks such as "Opening Credits," "Sushi Bar," and "Have a Nice Day" have some of the funky, moody appeal of Holmes' better soundtrack work, but just aren't especially memorable in and of themselves.

Granted, this music is supposed to function as a backdrop to the film's action, but outside of that context, it's not an especially interesting listening experience. Now and then, however, Holmes' creativity bubbles to the surface, particularly on "Restaurant Background," an ironic take on swanky restaurant Muzak that ends up being one of the score's more distinctive pieces because of its intentional facelessness, and on the perky, pseudo-lounge music of "Car Showroom." "Strip Club," with its breathy female vocals and wah-wah guitars, is an effective audio caricature throughout the album, Holmes seems to be the most inspired by sending up different styles of cheesy music and with scoring the film's climactic scenes.

"Drive to the Heist," "The Chase," and "The Heist" are prime examples of the Lalo Schifrin-meets-Isaac Hayes style Holmes brought to his other scores, and his die-hard fans won't be disappointed by these tracks. Overall, though, Analyze That is missing that extra sparkle of Holmes' best work, and the soundtrack's somewhat short length of just over 30 minutes adds to its slightly disappointing feel.

Αποτέλεσμα αυτού ήταν ο Σπανουδάκης να φύγει για έξι χρόνια στην Γερμανία όπου σπούδασε κλασική μουσική.

Does size really count anyway? In the charming world of vinyl records the lesser inches you get, the more attractive the result...

The Frantic "gang" is back with a lovely slab of wax in 10 inches. Love is all around on this release consisting of a bunch of cool garage stuff ranging from swinging to moody and from self-penned originals to obscure covers.

Side A's opening track titled "I Believe In You" is an excellent starter with moody feeling in vocals and lyrics, equally fuelled with cool Farfisa organ and fuzz guitar. "Ain't Gonna Cry No More" is the follow-up number, a fuzz guitar and organ driven track with fine vocals.

The Frantic Five have repeatedly proved in their 17-year career that they always kindly treat all the original stuff from the 60's paying this way tribute to the originators. "High Flying Bird" originally composed by a country-folk crossover singer-songwriter named Billy Ed Wheeler, gained recognition in the late 60's by an acid-folk version of Jefferson Airplane. In fact, the band's treatment on this track is a very successful cover version of the 60's teen punkers of Plague. Hats off in all three tracks of Side A to Dr. Organ's wonderful vocals!

"I Need Your Lovin'" on Side B is a cool and swinging tune based on a "frantic" tempo and cheesy Farfisa that brings to mind the early days of the band, back in the mid 90's! Same goes also to the title track "Love Beat" which is a lovely up-tempo garage beat song (with a hint of Merseybeat!) with great vocals that would perfectly fit into a party set. The record's last track is yet another exceptional cover version, "Bad Day Blues" of The Headstones with fuzzed-out guitar and killer Farfisa!

"Love Beat" is one of the most mature attempts of the band, an essential record for every garage maniac's collection!!!By On Stage

It is not too surprising that this is a very successful soul-jazz/hard bop outing, for it teams organist Brother Jack McDuff with the great tenor Gene Ammons. The quintet (which also includes the notable Harold Vick on second tenor, guitarist Eddie Diehl and drummer Joe Dukes) performs three basic McDuff tunes, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson's "Mr. Clean," Horace Silver's "Strollin'," and the still-viable swing standard "Christopher Columbus." Ammons, whose every note was always full of passion, fits in perfectly with McDuff's group; this accessible set has been reissued on CD (1995).

Composer and multi-instrumentalist is a seminal yet under-recognized artist on the Nigerian music scene of the 1970s. Though he recorded nine albums in Africa, the U.S., and U.K., Shango is the only one currently available. Recorded in 1974, King's Shango is a mixture of hard African rhythms, James Brown-styled funk, jazzed-up horn arrangements, and political messages.

From the standpoint of the Lagos scene, the album is a classic of the period rivaling virtually anything that Fela or Tony Allen were putting across at the time. With King blowing deep-groove soul and out jazz saxophone solos above the chants, the music becomes a boiling pot of hip-shaking sexiness and rage. King being a formally trained musician outside of Nigeria (one of the schools he attended was the Berklee College of Music), his conception of harmony is revolutionary as he strides blues, R&B, soul, post-bop jazz, whole-tone variations, and counterpoint to edgily shift the focus of each tune on the set- note the sweet soul blowing on "Prisoner of Law" that becomes a big band extrapolation of seven shades in the key of C. The title track choogles along, burning underneath with a series of percussive contrapuntal moves that accent a bassline already fragmenting under the power of the groove, and "Freedom Dance" takes the Brown ethic of overdriven funked-up brass aesthetics into territory that reflects both Eastern repetitive chanting and the gospel shout and roll of Ray Charles. There isn't a weak second here, not a maudlin note. Everything here is so deeply blue it's the brightest black you've ever heard.

Victor Ndlazilwana began his career singing with the male quartette, the Woody Woodpeckers, in 1951. In 1959 he played the role of "The Journalist" in the hit show King Kong and continued with the cast when the show was taken to London in 1961. Both Ndlazilwane and Boy Ngwenya performed with the Woody Woodpeckers at the classic 1962 Cold Castle Jazz Festival in Moroka Jabavu.

In 1970, Ndlazilwana formed the group the Jazz Ministers and recorded a number of albums including Nomvula's Jazz Dance.

After Ndlazilwana's death in 1978 trumpeter, Johnny Mekoa, assumed leadership of the group. Mekoa would later perform the title track Zandile as a tribute to Ndlazilwana with the Jazzanians, the first nationally recognised group to emerge from the University of Natal's seminal jazz courses. The track can be found on the album We have waited too long, recorded in 1988.

The album's title has more to do with the politics of its day (1972) than with the music; there's not much that's revolutionary going on here. In fact, the first track, the nine-minute "By the Red Sea," is a downright placid piece of soul samba, and the follow-up, a cover of James Brown's "Super Bad," reduces the original's intensity into a coolly percolating groove. And frankly, for a session led by the drummer, this is not a particularly rhythm-heavy set. Even the cover of Jack McDuff's "Soulful Drums" is curiously restrained, with some odd arrhythmic playing by Muhammad in counterpoint with Virgil Jones' trumpet and Clarence Thomas' soprano sax. Black Rhythm Revolution is not a bad album at all; in fact, most of the tracks are good to great, with the lengthy bookends "By the Red Sea" and "Wander" both featuring memorable grooves and tight, compact solos. It's just considerably less intense than the title might lead one to believe.

Arts of the second solo album by Prestige Records' house drummer, Idris Muhammad, are an even poppier affair than Black Rhythm Revolution, with a mellow soul-jazz feel replacing the slight Latin tinge of the earlier album. Side one is downright crossover, with its two pieces of positive-thinking pop (the lyrics, by Muhammad, are sung by his wife, Sakinah Muhammad) separated by a loose but faithful take on Wilson Pickett's "Don't Knock My Love." That's just side one, though. Side two is something much weirder and far more interesting. "The Peace and Rhythm Suite" is a side-long suite consisting of two long, spacy compositions that predate the ambient house scene by nearly two decades yet sound entirely of a piece with that style. Long, droning, sustained chords on a variety of wind and reed instruments float above Muhammad's percussion, which ebbs and flows in a free, almost arrhythmic way through most of the piece. Fans of the Orb or Brian Eno will find it an old hat, but for early-'70s jazz, this was downright revolutionary.by Stewart Mason

The second album seems at first to continue in this vein, but also gives the impression of a certain maturation as a different seriousness, a more relaxed singing, moodier, and a bit more improvised tension, more fuzz and such by the band. The albums form a good pair, but to a degree the second leaves out the hippie aspects too.

Carolyn Hester is a noted Folk Singer from the 60's Greenwich Villiage Folk Scene. She appeared on the cover of the "Saturday Evening Post" in the May 30th, 1964 issue and has been remembered in many books including "Chronicles", Bob Dylan's autobiography, as being the person who was most instrumental in Dylan's signing to Columbia records - the label that took an unknown singer-songwriter and elevated him to super-stardom.

Hester is known for her angelic voice and her repertoire of traditional English ballads mixed with an original selection of contemporary folk. She has recorded more than fifteen albums in her fifty years of performing. She was signed to the Decca/Coral label in 1957 by her manager-producer, Norman Petty. Also under Petty's influence at that time, was a hip entertainer and friend of Hester's, Buddy Holly. Throughout the '60s, Hester was well-established in the Greenwhich Village folk scene where she met a young, Bob Dylan.

Since 1972, Hester has played almost annually at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas and served as a member of the board of directors for most of that time. In 1992, Hester was asked to perform at the Bob Dylan tribute at Madison Square Garden which celebrated Dylan's 30th year recording for Columbia. Hester has appeared as a guest artist on many albums including the Grammy-Award winning album by Nanci Griffith, "Other Voices, Other Rooms" recorded in 1993.

In 2002, Hester was remembered as a major player in David Hajdu's, "Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina" in part due to her ties with Dylan, the folk scene in general and her first marriage to Richard Farina. Her second husband, David Blume wrote the hit-song "Turn Down Day" by the Cyrkle and played as Hester's side-man for more than 30 years before his passing in March of 2006. Blume and Hester's two children are both musicians and have taken over the role of backup players for Hester's concerts. The Blume girls also have their own rock band called the RBIs, so the tradition continues. The threesome will be recording a new folk album to be released in June 2008.

Comin' on like a sci-fi hybrid of T-Bone Walker, Little Richard, and Guitar Slim, guitarist/singer Nick Curran is a powerhouse performer who owes a strong debt to blues and rockabilly artists of the '50s. Originally from Portland, ME, Curran began performing in his early teens with his father's band, Mike Curran & the Tremors. At 19, while playing with local rockabilly band King Memphis, Curran met rockabilly legend Ronnie Dawson and ended up touring with him for about six months. Soon after coming off the road, he got a call to do a tour with Texas rockabilly queen Kim Lenz and eventually joined her backup band, the Jaguars.

Subsequently, Curran moved to Dallas where he quickly immersed himself in the city's vibrant blues traditions as well as the roots music scene in Austin. It was during this time that Curran toured with retro-country sensation Wayne Hancock. Citing such influences as Wynonie Harris, Otis West, Roy Brown, and many other postwar blues and rock & roll artists, Curran released his solo album debut, Fixin' Your Head, in 2000. Recording live, single takes on vintage equipment, Curran has cultivated an impressive retro '50s jump blues sound that is only enhanced by his predilection for vintage clothes and Nu Nile pomade. Nitelife Boogie followed in 2001 and further solidified Curran's reputation as one of the most authentic and exciting roots musicians of his generation.

In a move that garnered him a slightly higher profile, Curran signed with legit-blues label Blind Pig Records in 2002 and released his third album the following year. Featuring more of Curran's old-school blues and R&B, Doctor Velvet found the still twenty-something artist branching out into Delta blues, reworking the Sonics' garage rock classic "Shot Down," and performing alongside one of his musical idols, original Fabulous Thunderbirds guitarist Jimmie Vaughan. Further accolades followed in 2004 as Curran received the W.C. Handy Award for Best New Artist Debut and released his fourth album, Player!

Toward the latter stages of the tour promoting Player!, Curran parted ways with his longtime Nitelifes rhythm section of ex-Fabulous Thunderbirds bassist Preston Hubbard and drummer Damien Llanes. Ironically, Curran then joined vocalist Kim Wilson's lastest incarnation of The Fabulous Thunderbirds in time to record the band's 2005 release Painted On.

After leaving the T-Birds, Curran formed the punk-blues combo Deguello with T-Birds' bassist Ronnie James Weber and played in various side-projects before relaunching his solo career. In 2010, Curran released Reformed School Girl on Eclecto Groove Records.

Οι Last Drive είναι ένα από τα σημαντικότερα συγκροτήματα της ελληνικής ροκ σκηνής. Σχηματίστηκαν στην Αθήνα το 1983 και μέσα από τα πολύ δυνατά τους live και τον ήχο τους κατάφεραν αμέσως να ξεχωρίσουν, τόσο στην Ελλάδα, όσο και στο εξωτερικό. Το 1995 ανακοίνωσαν την διάλυσή τους και στα 12 αυτά χρόνια, κυκλοφόρησαν 5 δίσκους, ενώ έδωσαν αμέτρητες συναυλίες στην Ελλάδα και την Ευρώπη.

Το Φεβρουάριο του 2007 οι Last Drive ανακοίνωσαν την επανασύνδεσή τους για τρεις συναυλίες σε Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη. Μέσα στο 2008 μπήκαν στο στούντιο για να ηχογραφήσουν το Heavy Liquid, που κυκλοφόρησε το 2009 από τη δική τους εταιρία, Happy Crasher, ενώ λίγο αργότερα βγήκε και σε βινύλιο από την Inner Ear Records.

Recorded during June of 1969 at Marquee Studios in London with Gary Collins and Colin Caldwell engineering, the trio of Groundhogs put the blues to rest on Blues Obituary in front of a castle on the Hogart-designed cover while six black and whites from photographer Zorin Matic grace the back in morbid Creepy or Eerie Magazine comic book fashion. Composed, written, and arranged by Tony "T.S." McPhee, there are seven tracks hovering from the around four- to seven-minute mark.

The traditional "Natchez Burning," arranged by McPhee, fits in nicely with his originals while the longest track, the six-minute-and-50-second "Light Is the Day," features the most innovation -- a Ginger Baker-style tribal rant by drummer Ken Pustelnik allowing McPhee to lay down some muted slide work.As the tempo on the final track elevates along with manic guitar runs by McPhee, the jamming creates a color separate from the rest of the disc while still in the same style.Vocals across the board are kept to a minimum. It is all about the sound, Cream without the flash, bandleader McPhee vocally emulating Alvin Lee (by way of Canned Heat's Alan Wilson) on the four-minute conclusion to side one that is "Mistreated." While Americans like Grand Funk's Mark Farner turned the format up a commercial notch, Funk's "Mean Mistreater" sporting the same sentiment while reaching a wider audience,the Groundhogs on this late-'60s album keep the blues purely in the underground.

The pumping beat on "Mistreated" embraces the lead guitarist's vocal, which poses that eternal blues question: "what have I done that's wrong?" Blistering guitar on the opening track, "B.D.D.," sets the pace for this deep excursion into the musical depths further down than Canned Heat ever dared go. While "Daze of the Weak" starts off sludgy enough, it quickly moves like a train out of control, laying back only to explode again. "Times" get things back to more traditional roots on an album that breaks little new ground, and is as consistent as Savoy Brown when they got into their primo groove.

Moby Grape is an American rock group from the 1960s, known for having all five members contribute to singing and songwriting and that collectively merged elements of folk music, blues, country, and jazz together with rock and psychedelic music. Due to the strength of their debut album, several critics consider Moby Grape to be the best rock band to emerge from the San Francisco music scene in the late sixties.

As described by Jeff Tamarkin, "The Grape's saga is one of squandered potential, absurdly misguided decisions, bad luck, blunders and excruciating heartbreak, all set to the tune of some of the greatest rock and roll ever to emerge from San Francisco. Moby Grape could have had it all, but they ended up with nothing, and less.

The second album, Wow/Grape Jam, released in 1968, was generally viewed as a critical and commercial disappointment, even though the album charted at No.20 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts, partially due to the unusual two albums for the price of one double-album packaging. Though Wow added strings and horns to some songs, their basic sound remained consistent from the debut album, featuring tight harmonies, multiple guitars, imaginative songwriting, and a strong level of musicianship. The album included the track "Just Like Gene Autry, a Foxtrot",a tribute to the ballroom music big band era which was tracked to only be played back properly at the speed of 78 RPM.The Grape Jam LP was one of loose improvised studio jams with outside musicians this detracted from the stronger tunes on Wow,such as the room-shaking shuffle "Can't Be So Bad." Also in 1968,the band contributed to the soundtrack of the movie The Sweet Ride,and appeared, credited,in the film.

The band was also introduced to a wide group of UK listeners in 1968 through the inclusion of "Can't Be So Bad", from on the Wow album, on the iconic sampler album The Rock Machine Turns You On (CBS).

If you have any of the three previous volumes of this series, or indeed some of the Ace label's many Northern soul-oriented compilations, you know the drill: uptempo, vintage soul from rare discs that didn't come close to being hits, with a few tracks that weren't even released until the 21st century.

This CD has 24 tracks from the mid-'60s to the early '70s, with an artist roster that will challenge the trivia banks of even those who collect Northern soul anthologies. Sure, Brenton Wood (represented by a rare, early 45) is familiar, and at a stretch, R&B singer Lord Luther might be, too, but otherwise these are ranks from the rear file. The music is acceptably decent without being classic, with the Motown sound casting a huge shadow over much of it. (Indeed the Jesse Davis Band's previously unreleased 1967 instrumental "Hang on in There Girl" sounds like a Motown backing track awaiting a vocal overdub.) That's not the only influence at play: Jesse James' "Are You Gonna Leave Me?" sounds like an Impressions outtake; Jerry Ganey's "Just a Fool" heavily recalls the Righteous Brothers (unsurprisingly, as the Righteous Brothers' Bill Medley produced and co-wrote the track) and both smoother group harmony and harder funk sometimes come into the picture, too.

There's even a Jackie Wilson-ish novelty from 1964, Melvin Davis' "It's No News," with the inspirational opening line "if a dog bites a man, that's no news, but if a man bites a dog that's news." Nothing sounds particularly like a can't-miss hit, but that's not the point of these collections, which is to assemble fair upbeat soul that will have been virtually unheard by most people. On that count it succeeds, with more well-programmed variety than the typical such compilation. The story behind one of the better cuts, Salt-n-Pepa's lightly funky "A Man of My Word," is arguably more interesting than any of the music on the CD, having been recorded in Bangkok in 1970 by U.S. musicians serving at an Air Force base.

For the Northern Soul club attendees and collectors to whom this 24-track collection of 1960s soul rarities is obviously targeted, these are the kinds of jewels that make life worth living, the original 45s trading hands for incredibly high sums. For many others -- even soul fans -- the attraction's a little mystifying. For while most of these cuts are pleasant at the least and pretty enjoyable on some occasions, it's a little hard to get excited about them, and not just because there are only a few artists (Z.Z. Hill, Brooks O'Dell, Eddie & Ernie) who will be even mildly familiar to general soulsters.

There's just not too much originality on display, though competent Motown-ite tunes are rampant, right from the leadoff cut, Larry Atkins' "Ain't That Love Enough." If you want a spin on that general idea, the Quotations' "I Don't Have to Worry" is likewise a fair mimic of the Impressions; Don & Ron is kinda close to Major Lance; and Tommy Smiley's "I Won't to Cry" is very much inspired by the productions of the Temptations, right down to the way the guitar twangs on the opening bars.

Give some credit where it's due: Al McCarther's "His True Love for You" (co-written by a young Chip Taylor) is one of the very best early-'60s Jerry Butler imitations ever, one so well done that it overcomes its obvious debts to outside influence. You can't say the same about the rest of the CD, where the overall "doing the best we can to sound as good as the hits" vibe might both amuse and annoy by the end of the disc. The collectors who are pleased by such finds, however, will appreciate the detailed annotation that sheds light on the origins of these extremely obscure tracks (one of which, Eddie & Ernie's "Indication," was previously unreleased).

Great sounding and dense with information Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities, Vol. 2 is a true labor of love, compiling 24 solid tracks on the Kent label, a follow-up to the first volume released in 2001, four years before this wonderful sequel. It is sonically superior to another 2001 classic, Northern Soul Connoisseurs on Spectrum/Uni, the huge quantity of these anthologies from this music genre almost as overwhelming as the 45 rpm singles they collect. Ady Croasdell delivers 12 pages of liner notes on slick paper rife with photographs and copies of the actual labels from some of the 45s contained herein.

The music is breathtakingly magical, the "Heatwave" beat driving the Extremes "How I Need Your Love" sliding quickly into Jimmy "Bo" Horne's "I Can't Speak," hardcore doo wop merging with '60s pop creating sweet soul confections that stand up to repeated, endless spins. Isaac Hayes and Joe Shamwell combine to write the superb "Sea Shells" as voiced by the Charmels, produced by the legendary Hayes/Porter combo. It's followed by William Hunt's dynamite version of Bobby Hebb's "Would You Believe," also recorded by original Procol Harum drummer Bobby Harrison, as well as Grady Tate and Kenny Lonas. The song lineage here will no doubt make Northern soul fans' mouths water for more versions of these hard-to-find classics. Lonas' rendition goes for a good hundred dollars if you can find it, Hunt's version that's included here is probably even rarer as it came from a Steamside demo.

For students of the genre, Croasdell's liner notes are thorough and worth putting on the xerox machine to enlarge and cherish as you read them and listen to Janice Christian with Johnny & the Charmers performing "Just a Bad Thing," which sounds like Barbara Lewis and the Toys' Barbara Harris all rolled into one -- and how can you not help but love that! Jennifer Wells "Dining in Chinatown" is bright and full of fun, reminiscent of Ramona King's "Oriental Garden," though more up-tempo. Jackie Washington's "Why Won't They Let Me Be" is also a standout, but there's not a bad track on these two dozen sides which have not only stood the test of time, they've escaped total obscurity by virtue of their inclusion here.

Το 1965 στο σχήμα μπαίνει και ο οργανίστας Νίκος Κουρού.Την ίδια χρονιά ο Νίκος Μαστορακης παρακολουθώντας κάποιο live τους(στη Ρόδο)τους πρότεινε να ηχογραφήσουν το ένα και μοναδικό 45 τους.Οι συνθέσεις αυτού του 7’’ αποτελούν ένα από τα έξοχα δείγματα εγχώριας garage σκηνής.Η μουσική ανήκει στον Γιάννη Μανιατάκη σε στίχους της αγγλίδας Λωρα Τριπ.

Αργότερα το group ετοίμασε ακόμα έναν δίσκο το “ Φύγε-Φύγε” διασκευή στο κομμάτι “Simon Says” αλλά δυστυχώς δεν κυκλοφόρησε ποτέ μιας και τους πρόλαβαν οι Charms οι οποίοι έδωσαν την δική τους εκδοχή με τον τίτλο “ Τρελοκόριτσο”. Προς το τέλος του 68 η μπάντα διαλύεται.

Γεννήθηκε στις 12 Απριλίου 1935 στο Κέιπ Τάουν και ήταν γιος έλληνα διπλωμάτη. Τα παιδικά του χρόνια τα πέρασε στην Αθήνα, όπου πρωτοπήγε σχολείο. Οι δάσκαλοί του αντιλήφθηκαν πρώτοι την ιδιαίτερη χροιά της φωνής του, ενθαρρύνοντάς τον να ασχοληθεί με το τραγούδι.

Τα πρώτα του καλλιτεχνικά βήματα τα έκανε στο μουσικό θέατρο το 1948 και μέχρι το 1954 ηχογράφησε πάνω από εξήντα τραγούδια σπουδαίων δημιουργών, όπως ήταν οι Γιώργος Μουζάκης, Κώστας Καπνίσης, Μενέλαος Θεοφανίδης, Ζακ Ιακωβίδης και Γεράσιμος Λαβράνος, γνωρίζοντας μεγάλη επιτυχία.

Γρήγορα, η φήμη του ξεπέρασε τα σύνορα της Ελλάδας και από το 1954 ξεκίνησε μια επιτυχημένη διεθνή καριέρα, πρώτα στη Γερμανία και μετά στις ΗΠΑ. «Το Ελληνόπουλο με τη χρυσή φωνή», όπως τον βάφτισαν, έγινε γρήγορα διάσημο. Έζησε πολλά χρόνια στο εξωτερικό και συνεργάστηκε με τα πιο μεγάλα ονόματα της μουσικής, όπως οι Louis Armstrong,Duke Ellington και Ella Fitzgerald. Υπολογίζεται ότι στην καριέρα του έχει πουλήσει πάνω από 100 εκατομμύρια δίσκους.

Το 45 περιέχει το ίδιο κομμάτι σε δυο version.Η πρώτη με τον Γιάννη Βογιατζή ο οποίος και το ερμήνευσε στο Φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης το ’64. Cornetist Bix Beiderbecke's greatest recordings were mostly made in 1927. This definitive Lp (reissued in 1990) has most of Beiderbecke's best-loved work, including "Singin' the Blues," "I'm Coming Virginia," "Ostrich Walk," "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans," and his solo piano classic "In a Mist." Most of the recordings were cut with Frankie Trumbauer's Orchestra, although there are also two titles from the Broadway Bellhops, a similar group. The beauty of Beiderbecke's horn outshone virtually every other brassman in the 1920s other than Louis Armstrong, and he never sounded better than on these records. Beiderbecke is joined by such notables as C-melody saxophonist Trumbauer, guitarist Eddie Lang, clarinetist Jimmy Dorsey, trombonist Bill Rank, and clarinetist Don Murray, among others. In addition to the titles mentioned, the renditions of "Clarinet Marmalade," Hoagy Carmichael's "Riverboat Shuffle," and "Wringin' and Twistin'" are among the other highlights. Essential music that in one form or another belongs in every serious jazz collection.

Με αφορμή αυτόν τον δίσκο που έπεσε στα χέρια μου και με μια κουβέντα που έκανα πριν λίγες μέρες με έναν φίλο κάνω αυτό το post.

Γενικά σαν δίσκος με αφήνει αδιάφορο. Έχει όμως τον χαβαλέ του μιας και μιλάμε για εγχώριο προϊών και πολύ περισσότερο για μια καλλιτέχνιδα (για αυτό γίνεται το post) η οποία έλαβε μέρος σε αρκετές Cult ταινίες κυρίως στα 80’ς αλλά και στα 70’ς.

Η Μαρία Κώνστα έχει παίξει σε περισσότερες από 20 ταινίες β’ κατηγορίας.

Πρώτη ταινία που εμφανίστηκε 1977 (αν κάνω λάθος διορθόστεμαι )είναι στην ταινία του Ομήρου Ευστρατιάδη - Ήταν κάποτε παρθένες ή Σεξ και αρχαιοκαπηλία ή Ερωτική τελετή ή Επικίνδυνα αισθήματα ή The ceremony.Στις περισσότερες versions έχει αρκετές εμβόλιμες σκηνές με αποτέλεσμα να μην βγάζεις άκρη αν πρόκειται για τους original ηθοποιούς στις επίμαχες σκηνές.Ωστόσο στη version με τον τίτλο “ Σεξ και αρχαιοκαπηλία” βεβαιώνεσαι ότι στις σκηνές όπου συμμετέχει τουλάχιστον η Κώνστα είναι 100% πραγματικές η οποία δεν διστάζει να προσφέρει ακόμα και τον πισινό της στον Στέφανο (Χρήστος Νομικός).

Σε καμιά περίπτωση όμως δεν πρόκειται soft porno όπως αναφέρεται σε διάφορα sites ή blogs, κάθε άλλο . Η Μαρία Κώνστα στην ταινία έχει τον ρόλο μια πλούσιας διεστραμμένης επισκέπτριας στην Ιθάκη όπου έχει παρασύρει τον Άρη (Γιώργος Γκιντης) στην παρανομία και…όχι μόνο.

Last Exit was a four-piece avant-garde,free jazz supergroup composed of electric guitarist Sonny Sharrock, drummer/occasional vocalist Ronald Shannon Jackson, saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, and bass guitarist Bill Laswell. They were active from 1986 to the early 1990s, releasing primarily live albums recorded in Europe. Sharrock's death in 1994 caused the dissolution of the band, though touring had not occurred for several years before his demise.

Their sole major-label release, their first studio recording, and a record that iconoclastic critic Chuck Eddy considers one of the 500 greatest heavy metal albums in the history of the universe. Using the studio to their advantage, Last Exit explores sonic texture on "Prayer" and "The Fire Drum," but never loses sight of the power and energy that makes their live recordings so memorable. If you were to have one Last Exit recording, this might well be the one. But any one of their live records would enhance your appreciation of this great record immeasurably.

John Winston Lennon, MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English musician and singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles, one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music. Along with fellow Beatle Paul McCartney, he formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century. Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved as a teenager in the skiffle craze; his first band, The Quarrymen, evolved into The Beatles in 1960. As the group disintegrated towards the end of the decade, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to devote time to his infant son Sean, but re-emerged in 1980 with a new album, Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release.

Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, his writing, his drawings, on film, and in interviews, becoming controversial through his political and peace activism. He moved to New York City in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon's administration to deport him, while his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement.

As of 2010, Lennon's solo album sales in the United States exceed 14 million units, and as writer, co-writer or performer, he is responsible for 25 number-one singles on the US Hot 100 chart. In 2002, a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth, and in 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth-greatest singer of all-time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

The U.S. vs. John Lennon

The U.S. vs. John Lennon is a 2006 documentary film about English musician John Lennon's transformation from a member of The Beatles to a rallying anti-war activist striving for world peace during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film also details the attempts by the United States government under President Richard Nixon to silence him. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. It was released in New York City and Los Angeles, California on 15 September 2006, and had a nationwide release on 29 September. A soundtrack composed of John Lennon tracks was released by Capitol Records and EMI on 26 September 2006.

The film makes extensive use of archival footage of John and Yoko Ono, and includes a famously hard-hitting interview conducted by anti-war reporter Gloria Emerson.[2]

The U.K. release was on December 8, 2006, 26 years to the day after the death of John Lennon. The DVD was released on February 13, 2007 in the United States. The film made its cable television debut in the U.S. on August 18, 2007 on VH1 Classic

The film explores the political activism that Lennon became strongly involved in with the Beatles and after the band ended. John Lennon is established as being a potential political threat to the American government, and therefore much of the film covers the theme of 'silencing' him and other popular figures that became involved in anti-war activism. Throughout the film the audience can see both sides of the situation: the audience sees the protests and events Lennon and Yoko Ono organised, such as the famous "Give Peace A Chance" rally and concepts such as bagism and bed peace.

We also see the increasing fear experienced by the US government and CIA. This build-up of paranoia and fear for control led to the eventual deportation notice sent to John Lennon's house, informing him that 'his temporary stay in the USA was now over'. The film debunks and exposes the somewhat bizarre behaviour of the CIA and police department over John Lennon and other contemporary figures' behaviour, referring also to different modern issues like drug abuse.

The film features a montage of various mediums. There are videos of performances of songs and interviews of Lennon at the time, recordings of Yoko Ono both present and from the late 1960s and 1970s, as well as a basic story structure of retelling the story of John Lennon's attempts to spread a message of peace amongst the USA and, on a wider scale, the entire Western world during the Vietnam War.

Jimmy Hughes - Why Not Tonight ? The Fame Recordings, Vol. 2 2010 (Kent)

While Jimmy Hughes' second album (from 1967) was titled Why Not Tonight?, this CD is more an expanded version of that LP rather than a straight reissue. The first ten tracks are indeed the Why Not Tonight? album in its original sequence, but it's followed by 11 bonus tracks from the same era, essentially doubling the length of the original LP and adding historical liner notes. Hughes isn't much known outside the soul collector world for anything besides his 1964 hit "Steal Away," but this is a quite solid collection of mid-'60s Southern soul. Certainly a highlight is the title track, a gospel-flavored emotional ballad that was a 1967 R&B hit. Also a hit, though it was actually Jimmy's second recording of the song, was the bluesy, brassy uptempo "Neighbor, Neighbor." There's a good mix of styles and speeds throughout the material from the original Why Not Tonight? LP, including songs by Hughes himself and the famed songwriting team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham. It's soul with more imaginative, less clichéd melodic progressions than much of what was being done in the region; excellent backing arrangements that get into deep grooves without overdoing it; and fine good-natured vocals by Hughes, though it was on ballads like "Why Not Tonight" and Penn-Oldham's "I Worship the Ground You Walk On" that he was best, reaching for something more stirring. The bonus cuts include seven sides from 1965-1967 singles that are almost equal in overall quality, standouts being the arching bluesy ballad "Don't Lose Your Good Thing"Hughes' more dynamic "Time Will Bring You Back" and "It Ain't What You Got," the latter of which had an organ groove in the "Neighbor, Neighbor" mold; and the slow near-blues "Uncle Sam," which comes pretty close to antiwar commentary for a '60s soul number. Also among the extras are three previously unreleased tracks, two of them from November 1964 (the better of those being the quite nice ballad "Well Alright Girl"), and one of them being a different version of "Neighbor, Neighbor"; the final bonus cut, "Too Much," was first issued in 2009 on another Hughes compilation. Though not the flashiest singer, Hughes was a good one whose mid-'60s output is packaged in exemplary fashion with this release, and shouldn't be missed by soul fans.

In the early to mid-'50s, the "5" Royales were one of the finest and most influential R&B acts in America, merging potent tunes and frantic rhythms with impressive harmonies and tough, biting guitar lines from group leader Lowman Pauling. However, the group's fortunes were on the wane in 1960 when they signed to Home of the Blues Records, a small Memphis-based independent label whose house band was directed by one Willie Mitchell. Catch That Teardrop compiles 14 tunes the "5" Royales cut for HOTB, and another 14 cuts Pauling recorded as El Pauling with keyboard man Royal Abbit, and while it's not hard to understand why none of these singles were hits, there's no arguing there was a lot of life left in the group at this late date. With the golden age of soul looming on the horizon, the "5" Royales doubtless seemed a bit anachronistic between 1960 and 1962, as these recordings are very much in the mold of their best-known sides for King, but that doesn't reflect on the strength and assurance of these performances. "Goof Ball," "She Did Me Wrong," and "Take Me with You Baby" are top-notch R&B nuggets and "Catch That Teardrop" deserves its status as a collectors' item among British soul fans, and while Pauling and his group are the stars of the show, the propulsive and energetic horn arrangements Mitchell contributed to the sessions certainly add to their appeal. The El Pauling cuts aren't quite as impressive thanks to less-than-stellar songs like "I'm a Cool Teenager," "Mr. Moon Man," and "Jail Bird," but they allow plenty of room for Pauling's guitar work, and it's fine stuff. Novice listeners interested in the "5" Royales should start with their superb King recordings (try Rhino's superb anthology Monkey Hips and Rice), but these samples of their late-era sides show that Pauling and his group were making fine music right up to the end of their recording career

Γεννήθηκε το 1931 στην Καλλιθέα της Αθήνας και το 1952 ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του σαν μουσικός.Ήταν αυτοδίδακτος κιθαρίστας, αριστερόχειρας μάλιστα, κυρίως της ελαφράς μουσικής.

Ο ίδιος έγραψε αρκετά τραγούδια όπως Αμόρε μου, έρωτά μου, με τη Ζωή Κουρούκλη, Όλοι ζηλεύουνε τον έρωτά μας, με τον Γιάννη Βογιατζή, Μανίτσα μου, μανάκι μου, με τη Νίτσα Μόλλυ, Είμαι φίνο φανταράκι με τον Γιώργο Ζαμπέτα κλπ.

Ο Πιπεράκης διέθετε ένα κουιντέτο με το οποίο συνόδευε δημοφιλείς τραγουδιστές της εποχής όπως ο Γιάννης Βογιατζής, η Νάνα Μούσχουρη, η Λάουρα κλπ. Εμφανίστηκε σε γνωστά κέντρα της Αθήνας, όπως η καλοκαιρινή Αθηναία, ενώ συνεργάστηκε επί σειρά ετών με το Μάνο Χατζιδάκι, τόσο σε δίσκους όσο και στις εμφανίσεις του στο φεστιβάλ ελληνικού τραγουδιού αλλά και στο εξωτερικό.

Στο διάστημα 1965-75 δημιούργησε δικό του εργοστάσιο παραγωγής δίσκων ενώ στη συνέχεια ασχολήθηκε με την ηχοληψία στην Κρατική Ραδιοφωνία, από την οποία και συνταξιοδοτήθηκε. Sensations is a 1975 pornographic film written by Veronique Monet and directed by Alberto Ferro. It stars the writer and Brigitte Maier and features an appearance by Tuppy Owens. It was exhibited at the Cannes Film Festival and became the first European pornographic film to be distributed in the USA.

Eugene Francis Alan Pitney, known as Gene Pitney (February 17, 1941 – April 5, 2006), was an American singer-songwriter, musician and sound engineer. Through the mid-1960s, he enjoyed success as a recording artist on both sides of the Atlantic and was among the group of early 1960s American acts who continued to enjoy hits after the British Invasion. Pitney charted 16 Top-40 hits in the U.S., four in the Top 10. In the UK he had 22 Top-40 hits, and 11 singles in the Top Ten. He also wrote the early 1960s hits "Rubber Ball" by Bobby Vee, "He's a Rebel" by The Crystals, and "Hello Mary Lou" by Rick Nelson. In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Pitney was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and grew up in Rockville, now part of Vernon, Connecticut. Canadian Jazz pianist Brian Browne was a talented young prodigy when he left his native Montreal as a teen and began playing nightclubs in Ottawa. Subsequently he was enrolled at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he won a scholarship to study under jazz great Oscar Peterson.

By the late 1960's he was playing dates and recording with bassist Skip Beckwith and drummer Donald Vickery. I can't quite draw a bead on any release date info for this single, or find any reference to the Academy label. The Statler Brothers had their hit with 'Flowers On The Wall' in 1966, and the bulk of recorded cover versions of the tune seemed to fall between '66 and '68.

A small label and a slight Ramsey Lewis feel to the record (note what sounds like faked 'live' nightclub noise in the intros) - - It makes want to guess that it came out right around '68, give or take, just prior to signing with bigger labels for his first LPs.

An intriguing composer and ambitious pianist, German musician Wolfgang Dauner has combined jazz, rock, electronic music, and elements of opera and theater in creating broad-based, ranging works. While at times these compositions may seem too far-reaching, Dauner's best work shows the links between idioms and genres and offers provocative musical and cultural concepts.

He studied trumpet, piano, and composition at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart, then joined Joki Freund's sextet in the early '60s. Dauner appeared at several German festivals, then made his recording debut heading a trio in 1964.

It was one of the first European free jazz recording sessions. Dauner led Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart and wrote compositions for them in 1969. He formed the jazz-rock band Et Cetera in 1970, then, with Hans Koller, co-led the Free Sound & Super Brass Big Band. He helped organize the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble in 1975, and began featuring theater, opera, and dance segments along with his performances in '70s and '80s concerts. Dauner's composed music for films, radio, and television broadcasts, and a children's opera. He's recorded for Mood, Columbia, MPS, and ECM, among others, and he has a couple of sessions available on CD.
